In fact, all blame for the atrocities of FF16 ultimately resides with Ultima, who sets the events of the entire game in motion for its own nefarious purposes. Ultima also has some sway over Barnabas, who worships him as a god, and since Sleipnir is Barnabas' own creation, his loyalty flows back to Ultima as well. It can be said that Ultima is responsible for Hugo Kupka's death since it was Ultima who both gave Clive his power and egged Hugo on ahead of their fight. That vision causes Clive's power to grow too as he further connects with Ifrit and brings Ultima one step closer to the realization of its goal.Ĭlive, as Ifrit, clashes with Titan and eventually brings him and Hugo down. This is remarkably similar to what happens to Clive when he first attacks the Sanbrequois Mothercrystal earlier in FF16: Ultima presents Clive with a hallucination that preys on his trauma. Clive, however, cannot see the apparition. This ignites Hugo's rage ahead of the battle, and is the final impetus for his transformation into the more powerful Titan Lost. When the two meet again, Hugo sees a vision of Benedikta beckoning him before being attacked by Ifrit. That mystery man is later revealed to be Sleipnir, who convinces Hugo to challenge Clive again. It's one of the most heinous things any of FF16's antagonists do, but it wasn't necessarily all his own decision. He and his troops invade the Hideaway, killing many of its innocent denizens and destroying much of the progress Cid has made toward self-determination. While Cid and Clive are away destroying Sanbreque's Mothercrystal, Hugo shows up at their door. It would create more trouble for him - Cid and his Hideaway thrive in the shadows, which means that any unwanted attention is an existential threat.Īnd indeed, the unwanted attention Hugo brings is the direct cause of the Hideaway's darkest day. Sure, Cid can be direct and certainly isn't against the use of violence when it can help him achieve his goals, but such outright cruelty isn't in his playbook. According to one of Hugo's valets, the person who delivered the box claimed to have been paid by Cid - but that's just not his style. Alchemist - Bard - Beastmaster - Black Mage - Blue Mage - Dark Knight - Dragoon - Freelancer - Geomancer - Knight - Machinist - Monk - Ninja - Paladin - Ranger - Red Mage - Sage - Samurai - Thief - Time Mage - White Mage. Her death causes his already fragile mental state to collapse as he swears revenge against the culprit. In one of FF16's grimmest scenes, Hugo receives a box containing Benedikta's head.
